First European Championships Obstacle Course Racing next year in the Netherlands.
The first edition of the OCR European championships will be on June 12, 2016. And will be hosted by OCRA BeNeLux.
Obstacle Course Racing is a running event where the participants encounter various obstacles along the way. Examples of obstacles are wooden walls, crawling under barbed wire, swim through ditches, jumping over fire and climbing on rope nets.
The Championships will be hosted on the Strong Viking course at the recreation ground Berendonck (Nijmegen/Wijchen).
Over the past years mud and obstacle runs are strongly on the rise. The majority of the participants are recreational, but the runs are increasingly developing into a fully fledged sport. The competitive element is added at a number of events with a dedicated race section for the competitive participants. To allow the best athletes to compete against each other OCRA BeNeLux took the initiative to host the first European Championships.
That there is a demand for a European championship is made apparent by the enthusiasm with which the world championships in OHIO are embraced. During these world championships there is a large delegation of Dutch and other European athletes.
OCRA BeNeLux (since February 2015) is probably the youngest sports federation of the BeNeLux and aims to promote and professionalise Obstacle Course Racing. The ambition is to have Obstacle Course Racing become an Olympic sport. OCRA Benelux is also committed to improving safety, regulation and arbitration of the races.
Qualifying at European level
To participate in the European Championships, athletes can qualify at an increasing number of races all over Europe. For this we collaborate with other European sports federations for
Obstacle Cours Racing and also with the OCR world championships organization. This collaboration makes it possible for European athletes to qualify at the 2015 World
championships for the European Championships in 2016.
